March 2025

We're excited to share MapGeo news with you!

This quarter's MapGeo Community Spotlight – City of Gloucester, MA!

Gloucester’s Magnolia neighborhood wanamed for the unique Sweetbay Magnolia plants discovered there in 1806.

With more than 62 miles of gorgeous coastline, Gloucester, Massachusetts, the largest city on Cape Ann, is a city rich in traditions and maritime heritage that is still the largest fishing port in Massachusetts. Known as America's oldest seaport, once many residents call Gloucester home, leaving feels like they left a piece of themselves behind. It is also one of the best places in the world for whale watching and has an up-and-coming nightlife scene including "one of the 22 best Pizza places in the United States" by the New York Times and The Cut, a musician's haven and new beloved tour stop of many artists.

Perhaps one of the reasons why local hotspots have gravitated to Gloucester is that the city has taken significant strides in modernizing its infrastructure, particularly in managing its public utilities. Gloucester has invested in mapping its water and sewer systems, improving efficiency and ensuring better service for businesses and residents.

The AppGeo Division of Sanborn started working with the City of Gloucester back in 2011 to design, develop, and launch a custom web application, which is now known as MapGeoSince then, Sanborn has been managing and maintaining the City’s data from parcels to zoning to a fully built utility network of assets throughout the city for sewer, drainage, and potable water

Most recently, the AppGeo Division helped the city implement Esri’s Lead Service Line Solution, allowing for better tracking and management of water service infrastructure. This Solution will empower DPW staff to better track, remove, and replace lead service lines as well as provide an accurate up-to-date service line inventory which is a requirement of the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements. The ongoing collaboration between Gloucester and the AppGeo Division of Sanborn ensures the city's water network is accurately mapped, improving asset management and data-driven decision-making for critical infrastructure.

MapGeo Return on Investment (ROI) Reports

As many of you know, MapGeo web statistics reports are generated and sent out on the first of each month. These reports show how many visits, clicks, and so much more about user interaction that your MapGeo site received within a month. The MapGeo team has been working on an enhancement to provide a more detailed report that translates how those web stats provide benefit to your organization in the form of a Return on Investment (ROI) report. Here is a sneak peek at what these reports will look like:

We made some general assumptions about the amount of time saved for both municipal staff and constituents for each visit to the site based on the effort and time it would take to accomplish the same type of task by visiting the municipal office. An example of this would be to obtain an abutters list for a property. With this are general assumptions of cost saving per hour for both staff and constituents to be able to equate the time savings into dollars saved. The gas and carbon savings are based off US averages for vehicle MPG and CO2 per gallon of gas used with the average miles per visit saved set at a round trip of 10 miles per trip.

Now is your chance to provide your feedback on these reports while we are still finalizing the content. We want to make these reports to be meaningful and useful to your municipality when requesting funding for GIS.

Our goal is to send these out twice a year, in January and July to try to align with budget seasons to help you be the champion for GIS in your community.
